Going electric

A motor for solid boards

Solid composite leaves catch the wind, so the motor has to be sized for the gate's area as well as its weight. Ask the installer what force the motor is set to and how it copes with a gusty day.

The law treats an electric gate as a machine. The Health and Safety Authority's guidance says whoever puts it together on site from a gate and a motor is treated as its manufacturer: they must make the whole gate safe, CE mark it and give you a declaration of conformity.

  • Force limitation, so the gate stops and reverses if it meets something, backed up by safety edges or photo beams.
  • Photo beams across the opening.
  • A manual release, quick and easy, for power cuts.
  • Maintenance by a competent company, with the closing forces tested and logged.

The forces in the standard (EN 12453): no more than 400 N where the gap is 50 to 500 mm and 1,400 N above that, falling to 150 N within 750 milliseconds. The full guidance is on the Health and Safety Authority website.
