Composite Fencing and Gates

A composite gate in a composite fence should use the same boards and frame colour, hung on a post stronger than the fence posts. The gate costs €400–€500 as a kit or €1,350–€1,550 made to measure.

Matching the gate to the fence, the posts, and how high each can be without planning.

Free, no obligation. One local installer prices it, not five.

Fence and gate

One line, two jobs

A fence just stands there; a gate swings, slams and gets pushed. That's why the post a gate hangs on needs to be stronger than a fence post, set deeper in concrete, or fixed to a wall or pier.

Under Class 5 of the Planning and Development Regulations 2001, a wooden fence or wall in front of the house can be up to 1.2 m without planning, and up to 2 m elsewhere; gates and gateways can be up to 2 m. Composite isn't named in the rules, so for a tall composite fence at the front, ask the council.

Ask for the gate in the same boards as the fence, and the gate frame to match the posts, so the run looks like one piece.

Questions

Questions we get asked

Can a composite gate match my fence?

Usually, yes: the same boards and the same frame colour.

How high can a composite fence be?

A fence in front of the house is limited to 1.2 m without planning, 2 m elsewhere, under Class 5. Composite isn't named in the rules, so ask the council about a tall front fence.

Does a gate need a stronger post?

Yes. It carries the swinging weight, so it's set deeper or fixed to a wall or pier.
